Charles Piazzi Smyth ( 3 Janvier1819 - 21 février 1900) était un astronome britannique nommé astronome à la cour du royaume d'Écosse de 1846 à 1888. il est connu pour plusieurs améliorations dans le domaine de l'astronomie, et pour avoir avec sa femme Jessica Ducan Piazzi Smyth fait des études sur la Grande Pyramide de Gizeh

Biographie

Charles Piazzi Smyth [1] est né à Naples en Italie, fils du capitaine William Henry Smyth et de sa femme Eliza Anne "Annarella" Warington. Il a été nommé Piazzi en référence à son parrain, l'astronome italien Giuseppe Piazzi.[2] Il a suivi sa scolarité à la Bedford School jusqu'à 16 ans. Il a été par la suite l'assistant de Sir Thomas Maclear au cap de Bonne Espérance en Afrique du Sud, en ce lieu il a pu observer la comète de Halley et la grande comète de 1843. Il a pris une part active à la vérification et à l'amélioration du calcul de l'arc du méridien défini par Nicolas Louis de Lacaille.[3]

Il est célèbre pour ses théories sur le thème de la pyramidologie qu'il énonce sur les propriétés astronomiques de la pyramide de Khéops et ses relations avec la Bible. Il est le filleul de l'astronome italien Giuseppe Piazzi connu pour la découverte du premier astéroïde, Cérès.
